Scribus

Today, Microsoft Publisher, my favorite software for all projects I intend to print, died. It just wouldn't start up, and kept giving me cryptic error messages. So I started looking for a free alternative, and found a program that was even better. Scribus is to Publisher what GIMP is to Photoshop.

I am not sure your analogy is completely accurate. Scribus could relate to Publisher as Gimp to Photoshop in only one regard - by being free/open software. However, as far as the functionality goes Publisher is far inferior to Scribus.

OK, I mean that they are alike in that they both replaced expensive programs efficiently.

I'd say Indesign relates to Scribus relates to Publisher the same way as Photoshop relates to Gimp relates to MS Paint -- regarding functionality.
